Facts For Staff:
You are not a member of a union. 32BJ is not your union, they are your employer.
Many 32BJ staff are former 32BJ members. When we come on staff we lose the union. That’s not right.
Because you have no union, you can be fired for no good reason.
It is normal for union staff to have a union. It’s the industry standard. Staff unions exist at the IU and the following SEIU locals: 1199, 105, 121RN, 221, 503, 509, 615, 2015, 1, CIR, UHW, USWW. Staff also have unions at AFSCME, AFT, CFT, CNA/NNU, NUHW, OFNHP, ONA, UAW, UFCW.
A 32BJ staff union would benefit 32BJ members by helping to retain staff talent, prevent burnout and avoid excessive turnover. This would help us provide better services to our members!
32BJ members suffer when 32BJ staff don’t have security.
Staff deserve the same job security, representation, and contract rights that we fight for every day.
32BJ staff have been leaving to work at unions with a staff union, because their contracts offer them Good Cause protections, representation, and reliable wage increases that keep up with inflation and the cost of living.
We all know that unions make workplaces stronger, and the same should be true for us. As the president of NYSNA’s staff union wrote: “[our union] has led to better outcomes for our members. We have a say in our workplace and are able to negotiate a fair contract that allows staff to make a living and stay. This lessens burnout. It also gives NYSNA members the consistency and relationship building they deserve.”
